Picking the Cheapest Plan Is an Expensive Mistake

When you’re shopping for health insurance, it’s easy to think, “I’ll just pick the lowest-cost plan for now and upgrade later if I need to.” 😯
That mindset is common, and totally understandable. After all, no one wants to spend money on something they may not use. But here’s the truth.. the cheapest plan isn’t always the most affordable in the long run. In fact, it can sometimes be the most expensive mistake you’ll make.
Let’s talk about why.
1. When the Plan Doesn’t Travel With You
Many low cost plans are HMO only, which means they’re tied to a limited local network.
This becomes a major issue if you:
Travel for work or vacation
Split time between states
Need care outside your home area
Imagine being out of town, getting food poisoning or injured, and ending up in the ER ... only to find out your plan doesn’t cover out-of-network visits. That $0 premium plan can turn into a $10,000+ medical bill real quick.
2. Emergency? Denied.
Most people don’t know that some low-cost plans deny emergency services if you’re out of network or out of state. Even if it’s an actual emergency, the fine print matters.
And it’s not just ER visits, many of these plans also don’t cover urgent care, follow up treatment, or ongoing care needs beyond the basics.
3. Deductibles That Feel Like a Second Rent
The lowest-premium plans usually come with high deductibles... meaning you pay thousands before your insurance even starts helping.
For example:
$7,500 deductible
20% coinsurance after that
Limited coverage on labs, imaging, and specialist visits
Suddenly that "cheap" plan doesn't feel so cheap!!
4. What to Think About Instead
It’s not about spending more. It’s about being strategic. When I help people review their options, we focus on things like:
✔️ What’s the max you’d pay if something big happened?
✔️ Does it cover preventive care and basic visits?
✔️ Will it protect you if you're out of state?
✔️ PPO vs HMO—what’s better for your lifestyle?
5. The Smarter Way to Choose
Nobody wants to think about getting sick or injured. But being prepared costs less than being caught off guard.
I always say, cheap doesn’t mean affordable.... especially when your health is on the line!!
